Tlacka scowled in irritation.
"How long has this been going on for?"
He demanded angrily.
The alchemist in front of him swallowed nervously.
"It-has been going on for quite some time..."
Tlacka glanced down at the reason for this tiring conversation.
A twisted mess of metal and organic parts twitched feebly under his gaze. The creature was technically dead, but the primitive instincts of its body was still functioning, not aware that the small lab rat's life had been ended moments ago.
"This is ridiculous. I thought I had had him transferred to the chimera department?! Isn't it obvious that he's only capable of blending material? Asking him to bind a soul to an object is madness!"
The alchemist shifted slightly.
"It seems...that there has been quite some trouble in the chimera department. It is taking some time to clear up."
"Well, why haven't I been notified?"
"According to the information I have gathered, there was a slight...incident with the new leading alchemist of that department."
"Who, Tucker?"
"Exactly. It seems he had an accident with a complicated process. He was sent to the medical department immediately."
"Hm. What condition exactly is he in?"
"Let me tell you this sir, he can hardly be regarded as human anymore."
"I see. Well, keep Trudell from binding anything, he'll have to go on cleaning duty until Tucker is well enough to see to it that he gets a place creating chimeras."
He sent the quivering rat corpse one last look of disgust and swept out of the room.
As he walked briskly along the murky halls, he thought to himself in irritation how old fashioned the lab really was, come to think of it.
Most of it reminded him more of a dungeon, secret passages and forgotten chambers lurking if you knew where to find them.
And he knew...
It was only a very small part of the massive building that was used regularly, having been outfitted with modern technology so that the scientists and alchemist could live there comfortably.
He shook his head and went on, headed for his living quarters.
He was the leading specialist in binding souls, something that not many had managed to achieve. It was only with his help that most of the experiments held on that subject had become successful.
He sighed in relief s he reached the door.
He unlocked it quickly and went in, flopping on the bed.
"Nalea? Where are you?" He mumbled while rubbing his eyes.
It had been rather hectic, with the new alchemists causing trouble and the mountain of paperwork.
Not only that, but the government had been snooping around, trying to discover what the scientists were really working on.
Brigadier General Grand had sorted that out though, but it still worried him.
Suddenly he heard a rustling.
He jerked up, getting to his feet.
"Nalea?"
No answer followed.
He stepped cautiously forward, scanning the room carefully.
Suddenly he felt something twist around his leg, and he tripped up with a startled yell.
"What the-" He twisted around, landing on his back and pushing off with his arms, so he stood upright once more.
A cold laughter could be heard, and the familiar form of Nalea slinked out from underneath the bed.
"Nalea?! What was that for?" He asked in irritation.
"You need to brush of your defenses. I could have killed you in an instant if I wanted to." She said simply, green orbs glowing coyly.
"Right...You could give me a warning first though."
"What good would that do? No enemy would give you a warning before striking."
She said bluntly.
The corners of his mouth twitched slightly in a crooked smile.
"Allright allright, I get your point."
He reached down and gently reached under her, lifting her long slender form into his arms.
She gave a sigh of satisfaction and sneaked her coils around him, extinguishing the glow of her eyes.
"So, what have you been up to?" He asked fondly, nuzzling her blunt snout.
"Killing rats mostly. They have no need for me except when one of the chimeras decides to run amok. Murder is mostly my profession you must remember." She murmured.
"Hm..."
He sighed and placed her on the bed.
"Its been a hard day, I need some rest."
He took of his white working clothes and opened the small closet.
He gasped in shock and staggered backwards at the sight that met him.
"What the-how-?!"
Nalea raised herself with a hiss, glaring in surprise at the person within the closet.
"Why, hello there Abel. Been some time since we last met, hasn't it?" Fuhrer Bradly carefully stepped out, and met the confused alchemist with a friendly smile.
"How...Why?"
Abel whispered in shock, edging away.
Nalea hissed angrily, the loose plates on her neck rising in threat.
"I think you know very well why my dear Tlacka, this lab has been conducting experiments that aren't entirely legal." He cocked and eyebrow. "Am I right?"
Tlacka swallowed nervously. He had to get out...get away.
"NOW NALEA!!" He yelled, spinning around and grabbing the small blade he had hanging up on the wall.
The serpent hissed in fury, launching herself at the Fuhrer, which did not even flinch.
With a rustling she coiled herself tightly around his neck, opening her jaws with a 'clack' and sinking her fangs into his throat.
Bradly grunted in pain, but did not otherwise react.
A strained silence followed, with Nalea's fangs still embedded in th Fuhrers neck.
Tlacka suddenly realized, and lowered the sword.
"Oh...its you."
The Fuhrer smiled, and reached up and tore Nalea from his throat, casting her down with a crash.
She slithered over to Abel, watching in silence from behind him.
Suddenly, the Fuhrer was enveloped by a bright light, and in a flash the Fuhrer was gone, and i his place stood a young male-or was it female? Whomever it was, it looked decidedly out of place, as though it were not human...
"My my Tlacka, seems I caught you by surprise eh?"
Came the sneering voice of the humunculus.
"Envy." He said shortly, watching it cautiously. "What brings you here?"
"I doubt you have noticed, but things have not been going so well around here, am I right?"
Tlacka grunted. "Everything is under control."
"What about Tucker? And I heard one of your alchemists lost his humanity recently, oh, and one more thing."
Envy suddenly sighed wearily.
"Marcoh's run for it."
There was a shocked pause.
"Marcoh?! No way! We can't go on without him, our entire research is based on the incomplete stones he supplied us with!"
"I know. That is why the lab has to be shut down."
"What?!"
"You heard me right. Lust and I will set off some of the hidden explosives all around this building, so if you want to evacuate under the excuse that the building isn't safe enough, go ahead."
"But-all the experiments! All the results!"
"The philosophers stone will be the only thing to be further researched. All the rest does no longer matter."
Tlacka snarled angrily.
"What will Grand say?!"
"Grand does not know of my existence. Not even he knows all the secrets of this place."
Envy answered simply.
"Speaking of secrets, hows our little friend doing?"
"I checked on him a few months ago. The chamber is still binding him."
"Good. Now get the hell out of here before the sky falls and crushes you pathetic creatures."
Envy cackled.
Tlacka whipped around, gathering up Nalea, and pulled on his traveling cape.
As he sped out of the room, he registered the usual flash of light as the humunculus transformed. Seconds later, another Tlacka exited the room, though going in the opposite direction.
"What about The Old One?" Nalea whimpered, coiling herself around his arm for a better grip.
"He won't die too soon, but if he does then good riddance. He's far to much of a threat even in captivity."
Ignoring the snakes protests, he quickly dashed down a secret passageway, leading out of the cursed lab.
"How long has this been going on for?"
He demanded angrily.
