"It doesn't matter whose fault zis is right now!" the paramedic snapped, losing whatever patience she had to begin with. "Ve are vasting time!" She then took Martel by the arm and gently pulled her toward the ambulance.
"You aren't responsible for this, are you?" Bob glared at Dante.
"I'm afraid I am," Dante admitted apologetically. "This is because of my actions when I tried to open the Gate several months ago."

Martel didn't resist the pull of the French woman as she dragged her towards the ambulance. She thought this woman could be trusted.
"If this is because of that....how come it hasn't happened until now?" Frank asked somewhat coldly. He paused when he noticed Dante's tone. "Are you actually sorry for something wrong that you did?"

When they arrived at the ambulance, Oscar rushed over and examined the baby himself. "Jeez," he exclaimed with a grimace when he saw how serious his condition was.
"Is ze life support system ready to go?" the woman asked him, giving him a powerful glare that implied she would break him in half if he gave her the wrong answer.
"Yes, Marcelle," Oscar said with a nod as he headed back into the ambulance. He noticed that his superior seemed a bit on edge, and didn't want to provoke her anger.
"Please hand me your son, ve need to hook him up now," Marcelle requested in a tone much kinder and softer than the one she used with Oscar.
"He contracted something when I cut the array into his stomach, and for some reason or another it didn't show the symptoms until a few weeks ago," Dante explained. "I'm not proud of how I acted that day, and I want to do everything I can to save that child. So, yes, I am sorry for what I did."
Bob stared at her as if she just sprouted a second head and started singing folk tunes.

Martel nodded and handed Nikolai to Marcelle. Though the moment her son was out of her arms, she couldn't help but start crying.
Frank shook his head at what Dante had just said. His thoughts were brought out of themselves when he noticed his great-nephew trying to calm his girlfriend, who had gone back to wailing.
"Aw, come on, Poke. Don't cry" he pleaded with her, hugging her close. Arden seemed to pay no attention, still crying loudly.

"Let it all out," Marcelle consoled her soothingly before returning her attention to Oscar, who already had Nikolai hooked up to the machine. "Very good - under five seconds! I vont have to dock your pay."
Oscar sighed in relief. "Thank God! I'm barely making any money as it is," he mumbled.
"Complaining, are we? Zat's a deduction," Marcelle scolded him angrily, then turned back to Martel and gave her a kind smile. "Vat is the name of your pediatrician, sweetheart? I'm going to give him a quick call."
Dahlia started crying again shortly after her friend started sobbing. Dante hushed and gently cradled her. "Relax, dear..."

Martel managed to stem her tears and looked at Marcelle. It took her a moment to be able to speak. "Dr. Marco. Tim Marco". She looked at Nikolai, who was still barely moving, though his chest rose and fell very slowly. "My God...he looks so helpless" was all she could say. She wanted desprately to hold him, but had the feeling she wouldn't be able.
"Sorry" Kevin said, looking from Arden to Dahlia. "I just can't get Poke to calm down".

Marcelle walked to the other end of the ambulance where the phone was. She dialed the hospital and waited for a response while tapping her foot impatiently.
"His condition is bad, but it's certainly not hopeless," Oscar told her softly as he watched Nikolai, carefully monitoring his breathing pattern. "Marco's a kickass doctor and he'll do everything he can. Try not to worry yourself too much."
"I have a feeling she won't calm down until she knows her brother is all right," Dante said, looking down at her daughter, who was starting to relax a bit.

"Hello?" Marco answered from the hallway. He had just told Grio to get some supper, seeing as they missed lunch that day.
Martel nodded, but still looked sick as she looked at Nikolai. Why the hell did whoever controlled things like this have to do something so creuel?
"Well what would happen if her brother didn't you know" Kevin trailed off, as though he thought Dante would understand what he meant.

"Zis is Marcelle, Marco," Marcelle began as she took a seat on one of the small white benches attached to the walls. "Just calling to tell you ve have one of your patients vith us - Martel and her son, Nikolai, who is in critical condition. Ze child is barely breathing and is currently hooked up to life support. Ve should be at ze hospital soon, but is zere anything you'd recommend ve do until zen?"
"It would be best not to think about that, dear," Dante said after a thoughtful pause, then headed over to a nearby couch and took a seat. Her daughter had stopped crying altogether, and was beginning to fall asleep.

"Just try and make sure his body temperature stays at a reasonable level" Marco instructed. He then asked Marcelle something. "How's Martel taking this?"
Kevin frowned, then nodded slightly. "Maybe this'll take your mind off what's going on" he said to Arden, turning on the TV and switching it to Cinemax, where the movie Ice Age was being shown. Arden continued to cry but now sat with her eyes fixated on the movie.

"Not too vell," Marcelle answered grimly as she cast a glance at the blonde woman. "Ze poor thing looks like she is about to keel over."
Dante sat on the couch with her sleeping daughter, lost in her thoughts. If she ended up being responsible for that child's death, she wouldn't be able to forgive herself. Trying to get her mind off the situation, she turned her attention to the movie.
"...I still can't believe people actually get payed to make this mind-numbing garbage," Dante grumbled.
Bob, meanwhile, had gone into the kitchen to make the adults some coffee.

"Not at surprising" Marco said, shaking his head. "This isn't the first time she's been in danger of loosing her children".
'Mothers should never outlive their children'. That was something her mother had always told her. Now all she could do was hope that she had been right and that she wouldn't outlive her son.
Almost instantly, Arden managed to switch the channel to HBO, where the 1970s version of Carrie was being shown. Still crying, she smiled slightly as the horror began to unfold.
Frank had followed Bob into the kitchen. "You think someone up there's got it out for Martel?" he asked his partner.

"Really? Zat poor woman," Marcelle clicked her tongue in sympathy, casting another glance in Martel's direction. "Vell, ve will be zere in zree to five minutes. Zank you for your assistance, doctor."
"I don't think so," Bob said with a shake of his head as he poured the coffee. "I mean, her kids survived both Dante and Magrace, right? I think someone up there's watching out for her."
When Bob came back into the room, he raised an eyebrow when he saw what was on the television. "...Should they be watching this?" he asked as he handed a mug to Dante.
"Personally, I don't think so, but it seems to cheer her up," Dante said as she took a sip of her coffee.

Marco nodded, then went to search for Grio. He had a feeling he would need his help.
As Marcelle hung up, Martel looked at her. "What did he say?" she asked, looking at Nikolai who was wheezing softly as he breathed. It sounded very similar to the sound of Darth Vader's artificial breath.
"Poke likes violance. Espically when it involves throwing mutilated Barbie dolls at Mr. FunnyBone" Kevin said with a slight smirk. As if to confirm what he said, Arden reached for a nearby Barbie and began to pull it apart, still staring at the movie.

"He just told us to keep his body temperature at a reasonable level," Marcelle answered her simply, giving Oscar a quick glance that meant for him to get off his ass and take care of it.
Oscar, being the bright young man he is, immediately stood and got on the job, causing his boss to smile slightly.
"Zat boy might just have a future ahead of him, unlike the rest of zese idiots," Marcelle said, glaring dangerously at the other three paramedics who were yapping with the driver.
Officer Bob shuddered at the mention of Mr. Funnybone. "My mom made me watch that evil bastard when I was a kid. Bad memories, man..."

"Oh come on!" whined one of the paramedics, a skrawny boy with short black hair. "From what I can tell, the kid's odds are like one in a thousand".
Arden couldn't help but giggle as Carrie began her telekinetic rampage. Kevin smiled too. Anything was better than having her have a heart attack because of her brother.

Marcelle just stood her ground, gray eyes resting coldly on the young paramedic. The temperature seemed to drop a few degrees, and the lights in the ambulance flickered for a brief moment.
The tall woman slowly approached her subordinate like a panther going in for the kill. "....You just made me realize two zings: the first is zat you are an inkonsiderate little twit for saying such a zing in front of that unfortunate boy's mother; the sekond is zat you are a worse paramedik than zat girly Eltana if you kan't tell he has a very good shot at surviving. So, give me one good reason vhy I shouldn't fire you right now."
Dante was watching the movie when her cell phone rang. Suspecting who it was, she stood up and left the room before answering it.
Dahlia, meanwhile, was too interested in watching Carrie get revenge on her classmates to realize that her mother had left.

"Sorry. But from what I can tell, the kid's in the worst condition possible without actually being dead" the kid answered, shrugging. "I just feel we shouldn't sugarcoat things like this".
Frank shook his head as he watched the movie. "Don't you girls get any ideas" he warned to both Arden and Dahlia.

Marcelle then grabbed the boy by the arm and pulled him aside, not wanting to explode in front of Martel. "I zink I have a bit more experience zan you do vhen it comes to assessing a patient's condition," she snarled at him. "Ze child's condition is very bad, you are korrect about zat, but it's by no means untreatable. But zat isn't ze point! If you ever do something like zat again, you are gone."
Finished with scolding the boy, she turned him loose and went off to speak with the driver.

"Well, Dahlia's already on her war to be some sort of Marine or warrior priest." he commented to Frank as he picked up the little girl. "Your just a silly little girl, aren't you?" he asked with a smile before he set Dahlia down by Arden once more.
