Haley had been walking for days. Now that she was in the desert, she considered sleeping during the day and walking at night, perhaps that would make it easier just until she gets out of the miserable desert. It was then that she saw some kind of civilization ahead. What is that? She wondered to herself as she approached it. She realized that it was some kind of military base. Though she was happy to find people who may help, she hated being reminded of the military and in turn her uncle.

Kaiser had just recently taken a trip to the desert to do some minor investigating but without luck. He had just stepped outside to stretch from his nap when he spotted someone in the distance. "Who could that be?" he wondered to himself, deciding to go check it out for himself and so Kaiser jumped into an unused jeep and drove out to meet this mystery person.
" Hello there, need a lift?" He asked the young woman, he had a relaxed smile on because he was off duty. He was out of his uniform and wearing a white cut off sleeve shirt and his blue military pants. " It's quite hot out here " he was speaking the truth, it wasn't exactly comfortable outside. " The name's Kaiser, and you are?"

Haley wasn't sure if she should take the ride, "the name's Haley, but I am fine, thanks." She said to the man in the jeep. The truth was, she hated being looked after. She was fiercely independent sometimes so independent that she was a little too stand offish to others at times. She continued walking toward the military base.

"Now now, don't be stubborn, it's not healthy" Kaiser said with a smile. He then pulled out a cantine and took a swig from it " come one, it's another mile to the base....i'll let you drive if you want" uh these stubborn girls were always such a hastle, but Kaiser enjoyed the challenge.

Haley was becoming annoyed at this Kaiser guy. She stopped and rolled her eyes. "Fine." She said as she walked to the other side of the Jeep. "Then move over," she commanded. If she was getting a ride, she will be the one in charge.

Such a commanding girl she is~ was all he could think of while he scootched over to let her drive. "Well now aren't you the commanding one" He said with a chuckle, she was gonna be fun, he could tell. "So where are you from?"

Haley climbed into the jeep as he made his little chuckle. She remained silent as she switched the Jeep's gears and drove toward the base. She glanced at him after his second question. "Nowhere." She said to him, "I have no home, I just travel." She finished without changing her tone.

" Nowhere huh? Well, i'm sure i could pull some strings and have you be able to stay at the base for awhile." The smile not leaving his face " so....what do you do for fun?" Kaiser was trying to get atleast something that resembled a conversation going. " Are you an alchemist?"

Haley really started to wonder why he was so interested in her personal life. She glanced at him again, "I don't see how that is any of your business." She said after he finished asking his questions. "If you must know...I am indeed an alchemist...more or less a student...but I know the basics." She informed him.

Kaiser wasn't an idiot, he saw the look on her face after he asked his questions " I'm sorry if i'm making you feel uncomfortable or something, i'm just curious is all, no harm in that is there?" He was almost positive that he had overstepped the boundary line. " A student in alchemy you say? Hmmm i could teach you more advanced stuff if you'd like. Not like a teacher mind you, just a helping hand."

Haley wasn't too thrilled that he was making his way into her life, especially the part that is still a little touchy. "I prefer to study on my own." She explained to him even though she knew that she would never become a great alchemist without a good teacher.

" I'm sorry to say but you i doubt you'll get very far without proper training..." Kaiser took on a rather concerned look now. "Is there any particular reason why you don't want any help? Is the topic a sensitive one?" He asked cautiously, careful not to pry TOO much. " So......got any family waitin for ya?" Before he could get potentially yelled at, he stepped out of the jeep for they had reached the base. " Well, if you'll follow me, i'll show you to your temporary room." Kaiser resumed his cheery smile.

She didn't like these questions that were being asked. So she just stayed silent, she didn't want to say anything about her family. When they reached the base, she hopped out of the jeep and followed him to wherever it was he was bringing her. She looked around at all the different things at the base. Finally, she answered, "I have no family...they are all gone..." she said under her breath.

After hearing this, Kaiser turned around to face her " I am terribly sorry to hear that." He then continued to walk towards the nearest available room. Once they got there, Kaiser opened the door, it was a tiny room that looked like it had been used as a storage room not too long ago, judging from the mess. " You know, this room isn't really that good but, you can always stay in mine if you want. My room is pretty big and there's more than enough room for you. Plus, i'm not a pervert or anything so you don't have anything to worry about." Kaiser finished with an uneasy smile, he knew she'd most likely never go for that idea.

Haley rolled her eyes at his last comment. She didn't know why, but she was starting to enjoy his company. It's kinda nice to have someone to talk to... She thought to herself. "This room will be fine...thank you..." she painfully said with a half smile, trying her hardest to be decent to him. She walked into the room and without turning around she spoke, "look, I may seem cold, but it's just because everyone I have ever cared for has died...so I decided not to care for anyone..." she knew she would not have been able to say that out loud looking at him, she was opening her soul and that was something she was not used to.

" Not a problem miss, I haven't experianced THAT kind of pain before, but trust me when i say that i'm no stranger to it. I have taken my fair share of life, some of those lives didn't deserve what they got even, but i am truely sorry about your loses." He said with a sincere look. " But, i doubt your parents would want someone such as yourself to act so coldly and detatched to others, it's not good for the soul. I'm sure they would want you to be happy and honor their memories with a smile. I'll send someone to clean this place up for you soon." Without another word, Kaiser left Haley to talk to his superiors about her staying.

She refused to turn around and look at him again. She had started to cry and that was something she refused to show to him. After he left she felt a little relief. She may have started to enjoy his company, but she hated his company at the same time. That comment he had made about her parents stuck with her and wouldn't get out of her head. She wondered if she was indeed living life incorrectly. She shook that thought out of her head, she didn't want to be hurt again.

It was not until two hours later that Kaiser managed to get the ok from the general. He started walking back to Haley's room to tell her the good news, whistling the whole way there. Kaiser knocked on her door and opened it very slightly as to make sure not to walk in on her changing or something. " Miss Haley, i got the ok from the general to let you stay here..." He said cheerfully. " Now, how bout something to drink?"

Haley looked at him, "Uh, sure..." she said almost questioning her judgment. He knows too much, stay away from him! Her mind kept telling her as she walked over to the door to follow him to wherever he was going to take her, "I wouldn't mind a bite to eat either." She blurted out. She had been walking around for days, she was tired, thirsty, and hungry.

" That's fine, let's go to the caffeteria then." Kaiser said with a smile. " They usually got good food." He now started walking " So, i hope the room is alright...sorry it's not bigger." He said apologetically. They soon arrived at the caffeteria "well, this is it!" Kaiser announced cheerfully. "It's steak and potatoes today, lucky us!"
