Alchemy completely bewildered this man as he tore open the book's pages hoping desperately it would reveal its secrets to him. Alchemy amazed this man but God was it confusing, the complex algorithms and theorems involved with creating even the most basic of substances. Hell this was even harder then working with communications or cracking the most unsolvable of cases. Well nothing was unsolvable in Maes's mind but even this seemed like it. He could transmute the most basic of substances with ease, but its the more compound materials that tricked him. Diligently reading he stopped his mind from wandering as he eyed the next page. This eccentric alchemist to be wore gloves with transmutation to help with his alchemy, with the circle for basic alchemic creation on it. Hughes viewed the ceiling, and thought it was time to move on to more hands on alchemy. He took one of his combat knives and tried to transmute the iron in the paper clips on his desk into a chain without touching each individual clip. It was a success although, the Lieutenant Colonel wasn't satisfied with this simple accomplishment. Now trying to reciprocate Mustang's flame alchemy, he tried splitting the elements in the air and then igniting them but unfortunately all that was produced with an unvolatile spark that burned out as it dropped to the floor.
"Damn, this is harder then I thought----he sighed----"If only I could produce some sort of effect. Maybe I should try readjusting the decomposition.

Major Armstrong knocked on Hughes office door, cracking it open slightly and looking inside, noticing the cracks of energy as Hughes attempted to use alchemy. He chuckled lightly. "Excuse me sir,” Armstrong stuck his head into the room. "Maybe Alchemy isn't your strong point." He pointed out, crossing his arms in front of his chest. "And I would also recommend not trying to use Flame Alchemy again, I mean really. It took the Colonel himself to take several years to even learn the basics of that form. You could end up blowing up half the HQ if you're not careful."

Kimbley had happened by as Armstrong lectured Hughes on alchemical abilities. His ears perked at the words, "blowing up." He leaned on the wall outside the room and let out a low chuckle. "So, the "normal" man is trying his hand at alchemy? Isn't that a bit out of your league, Hughes?" He drawled smoothly. His golden eyes gazed lazily about the hallway.
